Uganda's Museveni Congratulates Burund's President Elect

Kampala,Uganda (RTN)- President Yoweri Museveni has called up and congratulated Burundi’s newly elected President Everiste Ndayishimiye upon his election as the country’s next president.

A high ranking member of the Burundian Army, Major General Everiste Ndayishimiye was last month elected to replace Mr. Pierre Nkurunziza as President of Burundi.

In what he termed as a “good call,” Ndayishimiye twitted "President Museveni this morning called and congratulated me and my party CNDD-FDD upon our victory in the May 20th poll"

“He reiterated his engagement to work and strengthen ties with Burundi,” he said in a tweet in which he tagged Uganda’s Ruling party NRM and Representative to the UN Ambassador Adonia Ayebare.

Ayebare worked closely with the president elect years ago, when he was sent as an envoy to Burundi by President Museveni to help in the pacification of the country.

Burundi descended into chaos in early 2015 after President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he was to seek a third term in office.

In May 2015, President Pierre Nkurunziza narrowly survived a coup detat that was planned by General Godefroid Niyombareh.

In the months that followed, amid continued bloodshed as President Nkurunziza clamped down on his political opponents, President Yoweri Museveni was appointed by the African Union to mediate the Burundi crisis.

It should be remembered that president Museveni also participated in the 1998 Arusha Peace Talks that saw rival Burundi rebel movements agree to lay down weapons to rebuild their country after years of bloodshed.

In his role as mediator, President Museveni consistently reminded the Burundian leadership of how their incessant fighting was damaging their economy which is the base of the country’s development.

On June 7, 2018, President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would not seek another term when his current term ends this year.
