KAMPALA, UGANDA – The political landscape of Manjiya County is undergoing a significant shift as the ruling National Unity Platform's (NUP) hold on the parliamentary seat appears to be weakening.
Incumbent MP John Nambeshe is facing an increasingly formidable challenge from Joshua Shimuli, whose campaign is gaining traction amongst a growing number of supporters disillusioned with Nambeshe's performance.
The 2026 elections are still several months away, but the early momentum behind Shimuli signals a potential upset in a constituency previously considered a NUP stronghold.
For the ending political term, Manjiya County has been a reliably NUP leaning area, with John Nambeshe who defected from NRM enjoying considerable support.
His victory in the last election was seen as a testament to the party's popularity and his own ability to connect with the electorate.
However, recent developments suggest a change in sentiment, with many constituents expressing dissatisfaction with Nambeshe's performance and a growing desire for fresh leadership.
Joshua Shimuli, a prominent social worker, banker and a local businessman, has emerged as the leading contender to challenge Nambeshe's incumbency.
While he has not yet been officially selected by NRM as the flag bearer his strong presence in the county and his vocal criticism of Nambeshe's policies have made him a popular figure amongst those seeking an alternative.
Several factors contribute to the growing wave of support behind Shimuli and Chief among them is a perception that Nambeshe has failed to adequately address the pressing needs of the constituency.
Residents cite a lack of progress in key areas such as infrastructure development especially in terms of roads where Nambeshe has failed to enable the constituency get even a single murram road, access to healthcare, and job creation.
Many feel that Nambeshe has become detached from the realities faced by ordinary citizens, prioritizing personal gain over the welfare of the community.
"We elected Nambeshe to represent us and fight for our interests in parliament," said Sarah Nabulo, a local farmer. "But he seems to have forgotten about us. The roads are still terrible, the health centres and hospitals are understaffed, and our children are struggling to find jobs. We need someone who will actually listen to our concerns and take action."
Shimuli has capitalized on this discontent, positioning himself as a champion of the people and promising to bring about tangible improvements in the lives of Manjiya County residents.
He has been actively engaging with communities, listening to their concerns, and outlining his vision for a more prosperous future.
His platform focuses on several key areas:
1 Infrastructure Development:
Shimuli has pledged to prioritize the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and other essential infrastructure. He argues that improved infrastructure is crucial for facilitating trade, connecting communities, and attracting investment.
2.
Healthcare
Accessibility:
He aims to improve access to
quality healthcare by advocating for increased funding for local clinics and
hospitals, as well as initiatives to attract and retain qualified medical
personnel.
3.
Job
Creation and Economic Empowerment:
Shimuli plans to promote
entrepreneurship and small business development through access to credit,
training programs, and other support mechanisms. He also intends to advocate
for policies that attract investment and create employment opportunities for
the youth.
4.
Education
and Skills Development:
He recognizes the importance of
education in empowering individuals and driving economic growth. His proposals
include improving access to quality education, providing scholarships for
deserving students, and promoting vocational training programs.
5.
Agriculture
and Rural Development:
Recognizing the importance of
agriculture to the local economy, Shimuli promises to support farmers through
access to modern farming techniques, improved seeds and fertilizers, and access
to markets. Shimuli's message is resonating with a growing number of voters, including
many who previously supported Nambeshe.
His campaign events are drawing large support, and his social media presence is rapidly expanding. He is also actively seeking endorsements from influential community leaders and religious figures.
The growing momentum behind Shimuli is causing concern within the NUP camp. While Nambeshe and his supporters remain confident of victory, they are clearly aware of the challenges they face. They have launched a counter-offensive, highlighting Nambeshe's achievements in parliament and accusing Shimuli of making empty promises.
However, these efforts appear to be having limited impact. Many voters remain skeptical of Nambeshe's claims, pointing to the lack of tangible progress in the constituency.
They are also drawn to Shimuli's fresh approach and his commitment to addressing the needs of the community.
The battle for the Manjiya County MP seat is shaping up to be one of the most closely contested elections in the region.
While Nambeshe still holds the advantage of incumbency and the backing of the NUP, Shimuli's growing support base and his effective campaign strategy pose a serious threat.
As the 2026 elections draw closer, the people of Manjiya County will be closely watching the unfolding political drama, weighing their options, and ultimately deciding who they believe is best suited to represent their interests in parliament.
The once-certain hold of NUP on Manjiya County is now anything but, signaling a potentially dramatic shift in the political power dynamics of the region.
