Kampala, Uganda (RTN) Only 30 people have represented the rest of the Ugandans to celebrate the 31st National Heroes Day at state House, Entebbe.
However Ugandans were urged to celebrate this historical day from their homes and observe safety in this COVID19 period.
Brief history
It is a public holiday observed on June 9th to commemorate those who lost their lives in Uganda Bush War (1981-1986)
After the overthrow of Idi Amin in 1979, Milton Obote was elected President of Uganda.
However the opposition party believed that elections were not fair and this led Yoweri Museveni to form the National Resistance Army (NRA)
On June 9th 1981, Edidian Mukiibi Luttamaguzi was killed by the Uganda Liberation Army for refusing to reveal the hiding place of Museveni and his soldiers.
The war ended with victory for NRA on January 25th 1986 and Museveni became president in 1986 a post he holds up to date.
In 2001, an act was passed in the parliament of Uganda which recognized the June 9th as heroes day of those who contributed to the liberation struggle that brought in National Resistance Movement government on 26th 1986.
