KAMPALA, Uganda (RTN)- Before the outbreak of coronavirus which has ravaged the economies of world's powerful countries, Uganda was already gearing for the general elections scheduled to take place early next year. But according to the Country's veteran President Yoweri
Museveni, the hope for Uganda to hold general elections is shrinking day by day due to coronavirus.
While in an
interview with NBS TV, Museveni, said it would be total madness if Uganda went into elections in 2021 when coronavirus is still in the country.
“It will be madness to say you go and people gather. I don’t think it will be wise,” he said.
The election roadmap which was issued by the Uganda Electoral Commission, indicate that presidential, parliamentary and local council elections was supposed to be conducted in March 2021 but this is now under uncertainty.
There is high possibility of Uganda postponing 2021 general elections but is most likely to have major legal challenge since it is not provided for under the 1995 Constitution
Article 77(4) of the Constitution states that Uganda can only Extend tenure of parliament for six months in situations of war or an emergency.
