Kampala, Uganda – In a significant political maneuver that is sure to reverberate throughout the Bungokho Central constituency and beyond, Nangayi Guyson, the Mbale District coordinator for the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) and a previous parliamentary aspirant, has officially defected to the National Unity Platform (NUP), led by the charismatic musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine.
The announcement, made at a lively function held at NUP headquarters in Kampala on May 21, 2025, marks a strategic shift for Guyson and injects a new level of intrigue into the upcoming parliamentary race.
Guyson, a long-standing critic of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and a former supporter of both the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and ANT, cited NUP’s position "at the front line of the fight" as the primary reason for his decision.
He expressed his belief that NUP offers the most viable platform to challenge the current political establishment and advocate for the needs of the people of Bungokho Central.
“The people of Bungokho Central have been yearning for change, for a voice that truly represents their aspirations and addresses their concerns,” Guyson stated on sidelines of the defection ceremony. “I believe that NUP embodies that change and provides the necessary momentum to bring about real progress. I am honored to join this movement and dedicate myself to serving the people of my constituency under the NUP banner.”
A Familiar Face Seeking a New Outcome
This is not Guyson’s first attempt to secure the Bungokho Central MP seat. He contested the same position in the 2021-2026 general election, but ultimately lost to the incumbent, Wanda Richard of the NRM.
While the previous defeat might deter some, Guyson's supporters believe that his experience, coupled with the burgeoning popularity of NUP, will provide him with a significant advantage in the upcoming election.
"Nangayi is a fighter, a man of the people," stated Sarah Mutono, a resident of Bungokho Central and a long-time supporter of Guyson. "He understands the challenges we face, from the lack of access to clean water and healthcare to the need for better schools and job opportunities.
He is passionate about serving our community, and we believe he has the energy and dedication to bring about the changes we desperately need."
A Background Rooted in Education
He holds a Bachelor of Science and an Associate Degree of Science in Health Science from the University of the People, a California-based university recognized for its accessibility and international outreach, as well as a degree in Information Technology from Makerere University, one of Uganda's leading institutions of higher education.
His educational journey within Uganda includes studies at Buwenge Town Academy, Busano SS, Nabuyonga SS, and Elgon High School for his O'levels, followed by A'levels at Nkoma SS and Nabumali SS.

Guyson's thirst for knowledge extends beyond traditional degree programs.
He has earned diplomas in social media marketing, environmental science, and journalism, showcasing his diverse skill set and ability to adapt to the evolving demands of the modern world.
Recognizing the importance of public health in addressing community needs, he has also completed numerous certificate courses in Public Health and Health Services, Epidemiology, Behavioral Health, and Human Biology, all from the University of the People.
This demonstrates his commitment to understanding the complex health challenges facing Uganda, and his determination to find innovative solutions to improve the health and well-being of his constituents.
Further solidifying his understanding of political philosophy and governance, Guyson completed a certificate course in the Moral Foundations of Politics at Yale University and another certificate in International Women's Health and Human Rights from Standford University.
This rigorous academic training has provided him with a comprehensive understanding of ethical leadership, policy development, and the complexities of navigating the political landscape and also understanding women’s Rights.
A Seasoned Journalist and Advocate
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Guyson has honed his skills as a journalist, gaining invaluable experience through training with reputable international organizations.
He has received training from Reuters, a leading global news agency, Russian Television (RT), and the European Journalism Centre, providing him with a diverse perspective on international news reporting and media practices.

His work has appeared in prominent publications such as DevelopmentAid, Mongabay, Earth Island, Aljazeera English, African Arguments, and Mundo Negro, demonstrating his commitment to in-depth reporting and his ability to reach a global audience.
A Radical Voice in a Changing Political Landscape.
Nangayi Guyson is known for his outspoken and often critical stance against the NRM government. His radical political views and unwavering commitment to social justice have earned him a devoted following, particularly among younger voters who are seeking alternatives to the established political order.
“Guyson is not afraid to speak truth to power,” commented political analyst David Okello. “He is a fearless advocate for the marginalized and a vocal critic of corruption and inequality. His defection to NUP is a significant boost for the party and a clear indication of the growing dissatisfaction with the current government.”
The ruling NRM party would be wise not to underestimate Guyson’s potential impact. His grassroots support, coupled with the growing momentum behind NUP, could pose a serious challenge to the NRM’s dominance in Bungokho Central.
Impact on the NRM
Guyson's defection and candidacy present a direct threat to the incumbent MP, Wanda Richard of the NRM or any other incoming NRM aspirant.
Richard, who secured victory in the 2021-2026 election, will now face a more formidable opponent in Guyson, who benefits from increased visibility and resources as a NUP candidate.
The dynamics of the upcoming election will undoubtedly shift as Guyson campaigns on the NUP platform, highlighting the party's message of change and accountability.
Within the NRM, Guyson's departure raises questions about the party's ability to retain supporters and connect with younger, more progressive voters.
Some within the party are concerned that his defection could trigger a domino effect, leading other disgruntled members to seek alternative political homes.
NUP's Expanding Influence
Nangayi Guyson’s move to NUP is part of a broader trend of prominent political figures joining the party, further solidifying its position as a major force in Ugandan politics.
Led by Bobi Wine, NUP has attracted a significant following, particularly among the youth, who are drawn to its message of change, accountability, and social justice.
“NUP represents a new generation of leadership,” said Bobi Wine at the defection ceremony. “We are committed to building a Uganda that is fair, just, and prosperous for all. We welcome Nangayi Guyson to our ranks and are confident that he will be a valuable asset in our fight for a better future.”
Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
While Guyson's defection and candidacy have injected excitement into the Bungokho Central political scene, he faces significant challenges in his quest to unseat the incumbent MP.
The NRM has a well-established political machinery and significant resources at its disposal, which it will undoubtedly deploy to defend its seat.
Guyson will need to mobilize his supporters, build strategic alliances, and effectively communicate his message to the voters of Bungokho Central.
He will also need to navigate the complexities of Ugandan politics, including the potential for intimidation and electoral irregularities.
However, the opportunities for Guyson are equally significant. The growing dissatisfaction with the NRM government, coupled with the popularity of NUP, presents a favorable environment for change.
If Guyson can capitalize on this momentum and present a compelling vision for the future of Bungokho Central, he stands a strong chance of achieving victory.
Looking Ahead
The defection of Nangayi Guyson to NUP and his subsequent bid for the Bungokho Central MP seat mark a pivotal moment in the political landscape of the region.
The upcoming election promises to be a fiercely contested battle, with significant implications for the future of Bungokho Central and the broader political landscape of Uganda.
As the campaign season heats up, all eyes will be on Nangayi Guyson as he seeks to convince the voters of Bungokho Central that he is the right person to represent their interests and bring about the change they desire in Uganda’s parliament.
The outcome of this election will serve as a key indicator of the changing political dynamics in Uganda and the growing influence of NUP.
